False Promises, 2016
Triggered by the particular story of a Turkish company selling fake life jackets to Syrian refugees, this piece combines the physicality of a child-sized life jacket with an audio collage of children playing in water. The child-sized life jacket, disregarded on the floor and stuffed with non-bouyant material, illustrates the small bodies that were led to the water by their parents in order to seek safety. The audio collage features field recordings of water and screaming children at play (screams that blur the line between play and fear), a tonal score created from the letters in the words 'False Promises' and a recording of the artist's young son repeating the words 'False Promises'.
This work reflects my interest in the choices that humans make to hurt other humans; the choice between empathy and disregard. As a parent of two children, what steps would I have taken to make sure that they were safe in a similar situation?
This piece was originally created for the Asymmetric Kin exhibition, curated by Paul Collins, Naz Cuguoglu, Mine Kaplangi, and Jonathan Rattner.
