SPILL, 2014
SPILL is a sound score created for {Re}Happening 2014 at Black Mountain College as part of their Chance Operations initiative. Chance Operations was designed to create collaborations for a random space on the grounds of Black Mountain College by randomly assigning artists collaborators. I had the privilege of working with artists Amy Hamilton, Victor Palomino and 'BLove' DeWayne Barton, and our assignment location was the dock at Lake Eden. We created a boat from recycled material, then performed the piece as a scientist, slave, fish, fisherman as my score, SPILL, played across the lake.
SPILL is a commentary on the continued contamination of water bodies by industry and the respective responses by corporate CEOs. This piece was created on the heels of the contamination of the Dan River by the spilling of tons of coal ash by Duke Energy in 2014. It combines found sound, appropriated sound, statements by CEOs and reporters, and predetermined text score.
