Yvette Cummings: Splendor & Fault
The New Gallery, Feb. 19-Mar.23, 2018 |
|
An element of art, space refers to distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece. Space can be positive or negative, open or closed, shallow or deep and two-dimensional or three-dimensional. It is also defined as the distance from other people or things that a person needs in order to remain comfortable, i.e. personal space. Continuing with the idea of space, the fourth exhibition in The New Gallery this year uses the work of Yvette Cummings to talk about the violation of personal space in the form of physical abuse. Abused herself as a child, she uses her artwork to not only talk about her abuse, but to allow herself, and her viewers, a space to openly discuss the ramifications of sexual abuse. As the mother of three young daughters, she also uses her work to discuss with the audience her dichotomous struggle between empowerment and protection. - Michael Dickins, Gallery Director |
