On Patrol, 2010
On Patrol was originally conceived by the idea of using the Caged Sound process on other images of artwork and started with the question, "I wonder what Guernica would sound like if processed the same way?". Upon receiving a commission from the Houston Metropolitan Dance Company, I expanded on that idea and created a sound score, with corresponding projection, that focused on a singular American soldier (an image from The Photo Memory Project). The score starts slowly, with Picasso's Guernica then builds a narrative arc with the addition Francisco de Goya's Third of May, George Grosz's Hitler in Hell, Kathe Kollwitz's Survivor's and On Patrol. It crescendos with a deafening silence, only for the sound to reemerge, to violently continue the inescapable loop of war.
